    What a hearing assessment involves

A hearing test is more than a single beep-and-respond exercise. It's a careful, individualised picture of how you hear — and how well you understand speech in real life. A typical adult assessment may include:

A look in your ears — checking for earwax or anything else that might be affecting your hearing (see earwax removal)
Pure-tone testing — finding the softest sounds you can hear across different pitches, for each ear
Speech testing — how clearly you understand words in quiet and in background noise
A conversation about you — your hearing history, your health, the situations you find tricky, and what matters most to you

Everything is painless and completely safe. For children, we adapt the approach to suit their age and stage — including play-based methods where appropriate.

What to expect at your appointment

    1

A relaxed start — we'll chat about why you're here and what you've noticed, with no rushing and no jargon.

    2

The testing itself — comfortable, quiet and at your pace. Most adult appointments take around 45–60 minutes.

    3

Your results, explained — we go through what we found in plain language, on the day, so it finally makes sense.

    4

Clear next steps — whatever's right for you, from simple reassurance to hearing protection, hearing aids, or a referral.

It helps to bring your Medicare card, any previous hearing reports, and your current hearing aids if you have them — even if they're not working well. You're also welcome to bring a family member or friend.

Who should have their hearing checked?

Hearing changes are often gradual, so they can be easy to miss. It may be worth booking a test if you, or someone you care about, has noticed any of these:

Turning the TV or radio up louder than others find comfortable
Asking people to repeat themselves, especially in cafés or groups
Struggling to follow conversation when there's background noise
A history of noise exposure through work, music or machinery
Ringing or buzzing in the ears (see tinnitus care)
For children — concerns about speech, listening or progress at school

You don't need a reason to check, either — a baseline test gives you peace of mind and something to compare against in future.

Understanding your results & next steps

Your results are usually plotted on a chart called an audiogram, which shows the softest sounds you can hear across different pitches. We'll walk you through it together — what it means for everyday listening, and whether one or both ears are affected.

A hearing test is simply information, and the next step is always your choice. Sometimes the result is reassuring. Sometimes it points to something simple like earwax. And sometimes it shows that support such as hearing aids — fitted to one ear or binaurally — could genuinely help. If a GP or ENT referral is the right path, we'll help put that in place.

Because we're independent, our recommendations are guided by your needs and goals — never by sales targets. You'll never be rushed, and you'll never be sold something you don't need.

    Hearing tests close to home

You don't need to travel to a city clinic for a thorough hearing assessment. Annemarie provides experienced, independent hearing testing in Narooma, for the wider Eurobodalla and South Coast community — from Dalmeny and Tuross Head to Moruya, Bermagui and beyond.
